Janet Bloom

1931 - 2020

printable version

Janet B. Bloom, 89 of Kenton passed away on Saturday, November 14, 2020 at Vancrest of Ada. She was born on Feb. 1, 1931 to the late Leobold "Pat" and Edna (Koch) Laubis. She married William A. "Bill" Bloom on Nov. 29, 1952 and he preceded her in death on Sept. 6, 2007. She is survived by a son, W. Jeff (Michelle) Bloom; two daughters, W. Jennie (Charles) Byers, Jr. and W. Jackie (Gary) McNutt; eight grandchildren, Nancy (Mike) Harris, Amy (Mike) McFarlin, Chuck (Megan) Byers, AJ (Tera)McNutt, Georgianne (Nick) Downing, Mallory (Ben) McPheron, Mason Bloom and Morgan (Travis) Downing; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by brothers, Wilbur, Gene and Allen "Red" Laubis. Janet was a retired nurse and held memberships in the DAR and Greenwood Grange. She was a proud supporter of the Kenton Athletic Boosters, Hardin Co. Historical Society and the Hardin Co. Humane Society and was a former 4H Leader. Janet was an energetic, independent and compassionate woman who enjoyed anything Hardin County or Kenton and especially loved events that included her grandchildren. She was a follower of those activities and could be seen in the audience or cheering in the stands well into her late 80s. She loved to play games, trivia and discussing politics and watching late night talk shows, attending craft shows and cherished playing cards with her dear friends, family and brother Red. One of her greatest passions was playing Bingo and games of chance in which she was often very lucky. The excitement on her face when she won will always be a great memory for the family. They are very thankful to have had so many years of laughter and love and would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Vancrest of Ada for their care. A private family service in her memory will be held and she will be laid to rest along side of her husband at Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Bloom Family Scholarship in care of Kenton Schools. Online condolences can be shared by visiting stoutcrates.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to SCHINDEWOLF-STOUT-CRATES FUNERAL HOME.

Dear Bloom Family, I’m so sad to hear about your mom/grandma’s passing. 89 years old! How can we ask for more? Janet was one of my “extra” moms, she got mad at me plenty of times for talking too much and not going to sleep during our many slumber parties. But she was just as ornery! And I was one of the lucky ones to have Mrs Bloom as one of my 4-H advisors! We had lots of fun and my most recent memory with Janet was a local DAR meeting, where she imparted many many words of advise and wisdom. Janet was so sweet to my mom when she was at Fairhaven, visiting often and sharing her sweet smile. I loved Mrs. Bloom/Janet/Jackie’s mom..we were lucky to have her in our lives. Hugs to all.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. Your mother was a favorite of mine. She was very generous. She gave a lot of her time as a 4H adviser. My parents always enjoyed card club with your mother and father. I have a lot of good memories of your mother. She always appeared when others had a need. Soup in hand. A planter for a sick person.

Thinking of you,
Nancy Albrecht

I will always remember that Aunt Janet was there for our family. My first recollection of “Nurse Janet” was when I was a very ill and frightened toddler in a Columbus hospital oxygen tent. She was there to calm my fears and feed me Jell-O and do what nurses do.
At Christmas family gatherings Janet made sure that everyone had a gift and there was plenty of food, games (bingo) and merriment.
After I moved to Colorado, Janet would keep me in the loop – sending me information about Hardin County, Kenton and our family. And there were phone calls as well where we would talk about our local history. She enjoyed history and knew that I did as well.
She will always hold a special place in my heart and I will truly miss her.
With fond memories,
Tom Laubis

My first memories of aunt Janet was her stopping by in her nurse’s uniform consoling mom about the latest Laubis kids ailments. Her calm demeanor infectious laugh was always welcomed.
It’s this time of year I think of Janet the most. After the holiday meal was over, she was always up for a game of gin rummy. It was always her or uncle Red the big winners.
There was no bigger supporter of Kenton and Harden County than Janet. She will be greatly missed.

Our deepest sympathy to your family. Knowing Janet as an "extra" mom for the past 50 some years holds many great memories. I will always cherish how she loved to send birthday wishes and celebrate an occasion with gifts from her special collections. Though we can't be with you at this time, we celebrate her life as she loved to celebrate the lives of those around her.
